Catacombs (Greek

kata kymba - near the cavity, close to the cavity) - the first time that the Romans used the term to spe cify where the Via Appia, where the tuff rock quarry, used to bui ld fortifications. The place was located near the mining cavity i n which it was buried in Saint Sebastian. That is why the place is called the catacombs. Many Christians want to be buried beside St. Sebastian, because the underground cemetery has grown rapidly. It was not the first underground cemetery, nor a particularly large.
